How Much I Spent on Groceries in March

March was kind of a weird month because we had car issues which took us down to one car. So on the grocery trips I'd take, I think I overbought not knowing when I'd be able to make it to the store again. Also, my impulse buying was off the charts this month! I just couldn't stick to my grocery list. I put asterisks next to every item that was an impulse buy and you'll see how quickly that all adds up. You will notice that I did no impulse buying at Aldi because, well.. there's nothing to impulse buy there really. Another reason I love that store!

I was planning to purchase a lot more from bulk bins using my glass jars, but Whole Foods seemed to be out of everything I needed - oats, nutritional yeast, spices, and dried beans. I've heard that they are in the process of switching suppliers for quite a few things so it will be empty for a bit.

All the trips on 3/23 will cover food for the first week of April as well, so I took the total from all trips that day and cut it in half. I put half the total towards March and the other towards April. That makes the total spent for March $376.77. Oooh my goodness that seems high to me. Like I said, I did really bad when it came to sticking to my grocery list.

I'll also say though, we only ate out one time and I packed Waves' lunch for school more often than not in March. There are a few things I would like to change next month:

- Not buy so many bottled juices. My husband really likes these and they've been on sale 2/$5 all month, so I bought a few each trip I made. I think I'll buy the larger cartons of it for $9 rather than the individual servings.

- Frozen burritos and wraps for my work lunches. It's just so easy to grab a frozen burrito out of the freezer before I head to work. I used to make spaghetti squash pizza pie and take that throughout the week which is obviously much cheaper.

- It's so much easier buying prepackaged food when I'm counting macros because I can get a lot of protein, low carb, etc. But a problem with macros - for me - is that I don't eat as many veggies. My focus for April is more vegetables and less processed foods which I believe will help our grocery bill tremendously.

- Since making these lists, I'm now aware of how much almond milk, tortilla chips, and salsa we go through! My goodness. I'm not going to change anything about that because it's something we enjoy, but I am going to stick to buying those things at Aldi exclusively because it's so much cheaper there.

Keeping track of all this has been a real eye opener. I'm confident that next month will be much better!
